Emily Schexnayder

Coordinator, Trips and Challenge Course Operations

Josh's Headshot

I do this work because I’ve seen how impactful recreation can be in helping students grow both personally and professionally. During my time as an undergrad, I worked at UREC and discovered a passion for the outdoors that quickly became more than just a hobby—it became my career. Now, I’m excited to support students as they develop skills and build their own appreciation for outdoor recreation.

You May Not Know This, But...

One thing people are often surprised to learn about me is that I was adopted from China.

Dream Day

If I could invent a holiday, it would be National Get Outside Day—a day where everyone is encouraged (and maybe even required!) to step away from their screens and spend time outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, kayaking, climbing, or simply enjoying a walk in the park, the goal is to reconnect with nature, recharge, and celebrate the benefits of outdoor recreation.

In Another Life

If I were not working in university recreation, I would likely be pursuing a career in emergency medicine. My previous experience on ski patrol was one of the most fulfilling roles I've held, where I developed a passion for providing critical care and support in high-pressure situation. I am particularly drawn to search and rescue operations, as they combine my commitment to helping others with my love for the outdoors and teamwork in challenging environments.
