From Campus to Corner Office: Career Lessons from an LSU Tiger

Abstract

A proud LSU alumnus reflects on a dynamic career journey, sharing valuable insights gained along the way. These insights include key lessons on transitioning successfully into professional roles, embracing lifelong learning, prioritizing self-care for sustained success, and contributing back to the community to support future generations. Through practical advice and personal anecdotes, this session aims to inspire and empower the next wave of computer engineers and innovators, providing them with strategies to navigate their own career paths confidently.

Biography

Alaina Metz Smith has over 35 years of leadership experience in information technology and organizational transformation. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and has extensive experience in IT project delivery and organizational management. Alaina spent over 35 years in leadership roles, including eight years as a consultant with Computer Science Corporation, specializing in complex IT solutions.

She notably led a global team of over 250 employees at Chevron, overseeing large-scale IT projects in petrotechnical and corporate functions. Currently, Alaina serves on the LSU Foundation Board and the LSU Computer Science & Engineering Advisory Board, where she leverages her expertise to advance education and technology. Alaina and her husband, Gregory Smith, actively support philanthropic efforts with the Tiger Athletic Foundation, LSU Foundation, and the University of Maine, demonstrating a commitment to education, community development, and innovation.
